No one is immune to a traffic accident. Everyone may have already faced such an uncomfortable situation, whether it is a total loss or a minor collision in a supermarket parking lot. Then comes the delicate step of the accident report. This week, we explain the details not to omit for your insurer.
The European accident report
An accident report is a standardized form that allows you and the opposing party to immediately describe the circumstances in which the accident occurred.
Here are the golden rules for properly filling out your report:
- Use the European accident report, which is identical throughout Europe, except for the language which will vary from one country to another;
- Use a pen rather than a pencil, write legibly in uppercase letters, and do not forget the back side of the contract;
- Check the personal data of the opposing driver as well as the information about their vehicle. If necessary, verify their identity card, green card, and registration certificate;
- If there are witnesses, provide their identities and contact details;
- Do not make any statement about responsibility;
- Draw a precise sketch of the accident and indicate points of attention, such as traffic signs, road markings, the presence of lights, street names, and the direction of the designated vehicles (A and B);
- If possible, attach photos;
- Sign the report, give the carbon copy to the opposing party, and submit your copy to your insurer;
Towards an electronic report?
By the end of 2015, you will be able to complete an accident report on a smartphone via a free mobile application.
This electronic process will allow for faster processing of a claim, without the administrative burden inherent in the handwritten report.
Although the process is legal, you are free not to accept completing an electronic report and to prefer the paper version.
Advice
It is always preferable to have an amicable report in the glove compartment of your vehicle.
Always make sure to note the license plate number of the other vehicle involved in the accident in case the driver intends to flee.
If no agreement is possible with the driver of the involved vehicle or if they do not want to fill out and/or sign the report, we suggest calling the police who will draw up a report.
If necessary, the police could subject the people involved in the accident to a breathalyzer test.
Safe travels!
