accident report

No one is safe from a traffic accident. Everyone has perhaps already been faced with such an uncomfortable situation, whether in the context of a total disaster or an ordinary collision in the parking lot of a supermarket. Then comes the delicate step of reporting the accident. This week we explain to you what details should not be omitted for your insurer.

The European accident report

An accident report is a standardized form that allows you, as well as the opposing party, to describe, immediately after an accident, the circumstances in which this accident occurred.

Here are the golden rules for completing your report correctly:

  1. Use the European accident report, which is identical throughout Europe, apart from the language which will vary from one country to another;
  2. Use a pen rather than a pencil, write legibly in capital letters and above all don’t forget the back of the contract;
  3. Control the personal data of the opposing driver as well as information about his vehicle. If necessary, check their identity card, green card and registration certificate;
  4. If there are witnesses, provide their identities and contact details;
  5. Do not comment on liability in any way;
  6. Draw a precise sketch of the accident and indicate points of attention, such as road signs, road markings, the presence of lights, street names and the direction of designated vehicles (A and B);
  7. Where possible, attach photos;
  8. Sign the report, give the carbon copy to the opposing party and give your copy to your insurer;

Towards an electronic report?

By the end of 2015, you will be able to complete an accident report on your smartphone via a free mobile application.

This electronic process will allow a claim to be processed more quickly, without the administrative burden inherent in the handwritten report.

Although the process is legal, you are free not to agree to complete an electronic report and to prefer the paper version.

Advice

It is always better to have a friendly report in the glove box of your vehicle.

Be sure to always note the registration number of the other vehicle involved in the accident in case the driver intends to flee.

If no agreement is possible with the driver of the vehicle involved or he does not want to complete and/or sign the report, we suggest that you call the police who will draw up a report.

If necessary, the police could subject those involved in the accident to a breathalyzer test.

Good road!
